Medical Cannabis Tasmania
Medical Cannabis Access Clinic in Tasmania
Accessing medical cannabis prescriptions in Tasmania is slightly different from the rest of the country. Your local GP cannot prescribe you medical cannabis directly, so you must be referred by your medical practitioner to a specialist doctor or experienced cannabis prescriber such as our doctors at CA Clinics.
The COVID-19 pandemic has promoted changes in the structure of healthcare consultations around the world. For the convenience of our Tasmanian patients, CA Clinics provides consultations and follow-up appointments via Telehealth. This ensures the same high quality of healthcare can be accessed from within the safety and convenience of individuals’ homes.
What conditions can medical cannabis be approved for?
The five main conditions that the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) provides guidance for the use of medical cannabis are:
Other common conditions where medical cannabis may be prescribed include, but certainly aren’t limited to:
In Tasmania, medical cannabis applications are approved based on the patient’s condition, medical history and proof they have adequately trialled other avenues of conventional treatments. For TGA approval, the application must provide some scientific evidence substantiating the medical cannabis or CBD oil prescription for your condition or symptoms. CA Clinics will look after this application process for patients.
How much does medical cannabis in Tasmania cost?
Our Free Screening Appointments aim to confirm whether your condition and medical history meet the criteria for a medical cannabis prescription. Following this, the Initial Consultation is priced at $99. For patients who continue along the process, additional costs are applicable and further information on medical cannabis clinic costs can be found here.
Australian data shows medical cannabis patients are paying approximately $50 per month for medical cannabis prescriptions.
Medical cannabis and CBD oil prescriptions are not yet covered by the Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme however, in Tasmania prescriptions may be subsidised by the Tasmania Government when dispensed through Tasmanian Health Service (THS) Hospital Pharmacies. This pathway is available to patients going through the Controlled Access Scheme in Tasmania, as a medicinal cannabis prescription from another state cannot be dispensed at a Tasmanian pharmacy.
If your CA Clinics doctor is based in another state, then the prescription can be filled on the mainland and shipped over to Tasmania.
How long do medical cannabis approvals take?
Medical cannabis approvals are generally processed within one week of application submission date.
If you are seeing one of CA Clinics’ doctors, they are based in another state via Telehealth, and the state that the doctor is practicing in may be providing the state approval. An approval in NSW, for example, can take from as little as 24 hours to 3-4 days, depending on the complexity of your case.
Separately from CA Clinics, other Tasmanian medical cannabis applications need to go through the Secretary of Tasmanian Department of Health as well as the relevant federal processes via the TGA and Office of Drug Control, and the time it takes to approve is usually at the discretion of the TGA.
How long does it take for my medicinal cannabis to arrive?
If the medical cannabis application is approved, the prescription is ordered by your prescribing doctor or specialist and shipped from the mainland or dispensed via a THS Hospital Pharmacy if you go through the Tasmanian Controlled Access Scheme. Unlike other medicines, the pharmacies are not allowed to have medical cannabis products in their stock, so each prescription is dispensed to order.
Once medical cannabis approval is granted it can take around 1-2 weeks for your medical cannabis or CBD oil prescription to arrive. Some prescriptions may take longer to arrive in Tasmania if sourced internationally.
What does a medical cannabis telehealth appointment look like?
Telehealth appointments are conducted over the phone or via video call and are very similar to being in your doctor’s office. Our experienced doctors will ask you questions about your medical condition and case history.
Doctors cannot carry out physical examinations (like blood pressure) via telehealth so they may ask more questions of you or your regular medical practitioners to ensure they have a solid understanding of your individual case and provide you with the most appropriate medical cannabis treatment options. Your doctor will also outline the application process and approximate timelines for approval.
Telehealth consultations remove many obstacles in accessing healthcare. For individuals with mobility, time, geographic or health constraints, telehealth makes it easier and more convenient to access medical treatments you need.
